UPDATE: That Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale was H.E.C.K. Y.E.S.-worthy! Hail S.H.I.E.L.D.! Am I right???
Every episode since Captain America:The Winter Soldier, all the way through the season finale, has been mind-blowing… Good on ya, Agents!
“Twists! Conspiracy! Traitors! Intrigue! Mind-blowing awesomeness.” That may not be what you think of when you think of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it will be after seeing this most recent episode.
After its premiere, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. seemed to lose steam and fans. Newer Marvel fans want more characters they know from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, veteran comic book fans want more obscure references, and Joss Whedon fans want more of the plot-driven, story-arching, game-changing television they’re used to getting from the Whedons… A show pulled in three directions can’t please everyone, and while its numbers were still high enough, they were falling at a steady pace.
Then everything that had been building in the background for the entire season started coming to the forefront. Seemingly insignificant characters were suddenly relevant. Characters that we thought we knew or that we thought were cliche and predictable turned out to be anything but. With The Winter Soldier focusing so much on the workings of S.H.I.E.L.D., it was bound to have repercussions in the television world.
And boy did it.
If you haven’t seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, yet then don’t watch this week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If you have, then you’ve likely already had your mind blown; know that it will be blown even further. This is what good TV is. This is what all three groups of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewers want. There are more obscure characters from the Marvel Universe like Agent Hand, there is a direct correlation between the episode and the new Captain America movie, and the story carries itself to high places even without the first two.
It’s hard to describe the awesomeness that was this episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. without giving anything away, but here’s what we can say. A lot of the predictions you’ve made over the course of the season (if you’ve been watching) might be right…but just as many of them will be mind-blowingly wrong. If you haven’t been watching the show at all, or if you gave up somewhere along the way, prepare to be completely blown away. We’ve been watching every episode since day one, and there were several times during this episode that we actually shouted, “OOOOOOH!” as new information was revealed and much of what we thought we had figured out was turned on its head.
The show’s creators originally said that because the budget allotted to television shows is less than the budget allotted to films the series wouldn’t be able to be as big (production-wise) as the films. Tonight’s episode showed us that sometimes the biggest things come in smaller packages. While we didn’t see aliens from another dimension decimating buildings in New York City, we did see plenty of special effects and a plot worthy of a John Grisham novel.
In short, if you gave up on the show, you’ll want to get caught up as quickly as possible, because it’s all connected and everything has changed.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is worth the watch.
