Some knew him as Smee. Some knew him as Mario. Some knew him as Eddie Valiant. Everyone loved him.
News has just broken that actor Bob Hoskins has passed away at the age of 71. The actor is not one that many people think of first when listing “nerdy” actors, but he deserves a place among the best.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is a classic. There’s no disputing it, and to this day, movies, TV shows, and games are making references to it. The cartoon/live action mash-up was beautifully done, and Hoskins as Eddie made the perfect sidekick to the wacky Roger Rabbit.
We may be in the minority, but we loved the Super Mario Bros. movie. With the passing of Danny Wells (Luigi from the Super Mario Super Show) last November, Mario fans have been hit hard with the loss of two fantastic actors who did fine jobs portraying the Nintendo legends.
And let’s face it, everyone loves Hook. The modern take on the Peter Pan story is a classic, and Hoskins’s take on Captain Hook’s first mate was a treat for adults and children alike. He was a pirate who clearly didn’t belong with the pirates, and he took the character somewhere we’d never seen before.
In all honesty, there’s no tribute great enough for this man. As kids of the 90s, we grew up watching Bob. He took all of our favorites – cartoons and video games – and brought them to life in a way that no one has and no one ever will.
We’ll miss you, Bob.
