Here’s what we have to say:
Apples to Apples styled games are a dime a dozen these days. It’s a formula that works well, and it’s a formula that can be transformed into a number of different subgenres. Schmovie: The Hilarious Game of Outlandish Films takes it straight to Hollywood, and it does so better than pretty much any other game in this style!
The rules of Schmovie are simple. There is one judge or, more Schmovie-specifically, one “producer” (producer changes clockwise each round). The producer will roll the genre dice and flip over a “What” card and a “Who” card. The rest of the players have to create a movie title that is a play on these cards and write it down on their individual dry erase boards–which awesomely feature Schmovie‘s own play on Mystery Science Theater, and the producer decides which movie he wants to produce (and subsequently which player is the winner for that round). Example: The dice lands on ACTION FILM, and the producer flips over the cards KILLER and SANDWICH. Each player creates a title for an action movie about a killer sandwich, then hands their boards to a non-producer player to be read aloud. One reads “Loaded Bun”, another reads “Last Action Gyro”, and another reads “Rye Hard”.
And the winner gets points, right? WRONG! Not content to simply award the winning players with points, the creators of Schmovie created 19 unique “schquid” trophies from which the winner of each round will choose one. Technically the game is over when one player obtains a certain number of trophies, but, much like in Apples to Apples, who wins is really not all that important.
Shepherd Book from Joss Whedon’s Firefly said, “The journey is the worthier part,” and we’re pretty sure he was talking about Schmovie. This game plays out differently every time you sit down depending on who you play it with. We played with our parents, and the movie puns were largely based on old classics; another time we played with some friends closer to our own age, and the titles were far raunchier… Either way, the game had us holding our sides with laughter.
Schmovie is the perfect storm of everything a good game should be. It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s not the same game over and over again. As soon as we played it for the first time, it earned itself a permanent spot in our “Essential Board Games” stack. Are you sold on it yet? If so, then click here to order Schmovie today! Trust us, you’ll be glad you did.
