Ant on Comics: New Comics PREVIEW for 12/18/13

20130915-125728.jpg

ant_hawkeyeHello, comic friends! I am here to discuss comics that will be released this Wednesday, December 18th, 2013. If you want to hear my reviews on the comics I picked up last week, you can check them out on the Ant On Podcast on iTunes!

Now, if I had the wallet of guys like Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark… I would honestly buy one copy of every comic book that comes out. But, alas, I’m not a jewel thief like Catwoman and can’t phase through the floor of my local comic book store like Kitty Pryde to grab every comic book created. So instead I look through the list every week and pull the ones that interest me the most.

All book premises are in quotes and brought to you by TFAW. The rest is all me, friends! For a complete list of releases you can visit Comic List.

THIS WEEK’S PICKS:

Trish out of Water #3

20131216-163454.jpg

“When her life comes crashing down on her-literally-Trish discovers she is more alone than she ever could have anticipated! After the startling revelation at the conclusion of last issue, Trish must now deal with a devastating tidal wave that threatens to destroy what little remains in her life, as well as an even more shocking discovery that she may indeed be the cause of everything terrible that is happening to her! Aspen’s own Vince Hernandez is joined by the artistic talents of Giuseppe Cafaro and Andrea Dotta to bring to you Aspen’s newest hit series, TRISH OUT OF WATER!”

I absolutely love this series that read like a teen drama story in the first issue but then introduced a great supernatural element at the end. A great independent series that I haven’t found anybody else who has been trading this, but I use this column to try and spread the word.

Batman 66 #6

20131216-164043.jpg

“Guest writer Tom Peyer unleashes the Bookworm on the Dynamic Duo! At first, it appears that he’s only made a public display of stealing a giant, worthless check. But it’s actually a front for a more nefarious plot to uncover all of Batman’s secrets! And then get ready for Olga, Queen of the Cossacks.”

If you like the Batman television show from 1966, then this comic is for you! I don’t normally read many DC Comics series, but growing up with the reruns of this classic show has made me instantly love what they are doing in this book.

Harley Quinn #1

20131216-165434.jpg

“Harley is set to begin her new life, but she needs a job first! Enter the Coney Island Roller Derby! It’s game time as Harley sets out to destroy her competition – literally!”

In last month’s Harley Quinn #0, it showcased over a dozen different artists that took turns telling the story of Harley finding out she is getting her own series which begins this month. The issue was a pretty cool idea, though it probably will have nothing to do with the actual story, but I’m excited to see where this series will go.

Red Sonja #6

20131216-170435.jpg

“This is IT. The culmination to the bloody WAR of VENGEANCE waged between two former sisters of the sword, DARK ANNISIA and RED SONJA! Annisia has done something no other god nor demon has been able to do, force Sonja to her knees in surrender. But Sonja returns, a changed woman, and she has a mighty SCORE to settle! The climax to the entire QUEEN OF PLAGUES saga is here!”

I never read Red Sonja prior to this new series but really enjoyed this character thanks to Gail Simone’s writing.

The Illegitimates #1 (of 6)

20131216-171818.jpg

“Jack Steele: World renowned agent of OLYMPUS, super-spy, debonair, lover of ladies, man-slut. While facing off with his arch-nemesis, Viktor Dannikor, Steele faces his biggest defeat, but who will take his place? Olympus scrambles to find not one, but FIVE newbie agents to fill the void and, unbeknownst to them, they share a common thread. Can these five strangers embrace their fates and come together to save the world? They are THE ILLEGITIMATES! And if you called them bastards…. you’d be absolutely right!”

I pre-ordered this book because of the writer, Taran Killam. He has been a cast member on Saturday Night Live for the past several years, and I was pleasantly surprised when I found out he was writing a comic book.

My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic #14

20131216-172441.jpg

“Swashbuckling and mutiny abound! From a mysterious map to a moody captain, our heroes sure have their hoofs full! The ponies are hot on the trail of Hoofbeard’s long lost treasure – but can they stand him long enough to find it? Find out in this action-packed issue of My Little Pony!”

My Little Pony Micro-Series #10 Luna

20131216-172931.jpg

“A royal eclipse! When Celestia has to leave for the day, Luna is charged to keep watch over waking hours. Will the guardian of the night be able to juggle a new set of responsibilities while keeping her cool? (Not to mention keeping awake!)”

This will be the final issue of the micro-series that took one issue each to focus on individual characters for My Little Pony.

Pretty Deadly #3

20131216-173624.jpg

“All blood spilled into the earth makes its way to a river. Where those rivers meet, Fox attends the birth of a beast, the child of a thousand violent deaths.”

This series takes a lot of concentration to follow what is happening, but it’s very entertaining as you do that. The art is beautiful, so it’s worth a second read right after.

Revival #16

20131216-174318.jpg

“Dana and her ex, Derrick, investigate Em murderer suspect Aaron, but they aren’t the only ones. Meanwhile, May Tao gets closer to connecting the Cypresses to the burned bones of the Check brothers.”

This is one of my favorite on-going series. If you are into supernatural horror then this book is for you.

Ten Grand #6

20131216-174653.jpg

“Why has a wounded angel been chained and imprisoned on the outskirts of hell for a hundred thousand years? And why should Joe Fitzgerald care enough to help her, since it’ll just slow him down in his search for Laura? Knowing that his actions could result in his permanent death, and with a civil war breaking out in heaven, Joe must make a fateful decision that will endanger not only his soul, but the soul of the woman he loves more than life itself.”

A Voice In The Dark #2

20131216-175654.jpg

“‘BLOOD MAKES NOISE,’ Conclusion Zoey’s talk radio show will become a deadly public forum for her twisted listeners before she will even know what hit her.”

This comic’s introduction blew me away. I was so into the story that it felt like the world had stopped around me as I entered Zoey’s world. She started college and has been counting the days since she last murdered somebody. She is fighting the flashes of wanting to kill again. She starts a radio show to allow anonymous callers to share their problems.

My love for this title caught the attention of the creator, Larime Taylor, and he made me the reader of the month as well as telling me that I am mentioned in his column in the back of this new issue.

All-New X-Men #20

20131216-180130.jpg

“The fallout of X-MEN: BATTLE OF THE ATOM continues! X-23 is back and kissing . . . WHO IS THE MYSTERY MAN??!”

The Amazing Spider-Man #700.4 & 700.5

20131216-180657.jpg

“Continuing the special celebration of THE ORIGINAL SPIDER-MAN from Man of Action’s Joe Casey & Tim Green (AVENGERS ACADEMY)! What is the Black Lodge? And how has Spider-Man been trapped there, surrounded by his deadliest foes? Then, the Black Cat and Spider-Man team-up to bust an international art thievery ring in CAT & MOUSE by Jen Van Meter (CAPTAIN MARVEL) and Emma Rios (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN). Finally, a young boy must learn he can’t rely on super heroes like Spider-Man to stand up against bullies in 12 O’CLOCK HIGH by Clay Chapman (AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES) and Javier Rodriguez (DAREDEVIL).”

“Peter Parker and Johnny Storm must stop an apocalyptic future by fighting–the Fantastic Four?! By Brian Reed (MS. MARVEL) and Sean Chen (AVENGERS)! Then, a young child risks his life to save Spider-Man’s in the emotional WHAT WOULD SPIDER-MAN DO? By Kevin Grievioux (NEW WARRIORS) and Lee Weeks (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN)!”

The Superior Spider-Man #24

20131216-181127.jpg

“DARKEST HOURS Part 3 of 4: “Complications”. The birth of a new Goblin! The return of Cardiac! MJ’s greatest fear! And the one question everyone will be asking: “Who is THE SUPERIOR VENOM?!”

X-Men #8

20131216-181717.jpg

“Part 2 of MUERTAS. Lady Deathstrike discovers the identity of a foe the X-Men thought they had beaten, and will stop at nothing to track it down! Without her tech, Karima struggles to remember who she was. And introducing . . . Monet!”

Conclusion:

My podcast, Ant On, is available on iTunes (with links above and below this post), and I do several episodes focused 100% on comic book previews and reviews.

I also do a comic book segment on my first podcast, AB Conversation, in which I will highlight just a few of the books, leaving reason to check out the Ant On Comics podcast as well for the full feature. The AB Conversation covers movies, television, comics, video games, food and the internet every Sunday morning.

I always like to support my local comic book shop. Pre-orders are key. If you purchase the monthly Previews guide located at your store, you can browse upcoming titles and set up an order and/or a pull-list with your store so they order the items that you are interested in.

There are several online sites to shop from too. Things From Another World and Midtown Comics are two that I like to frequent.

If you are into digital comics, then simply go to Comixology or the individual websites and apps for the publishers you purchase from.

Are there any titles that you are excited for that I didn’t talk about? Contact me and share your non-spoiler suggestions! If you don’t agree with what I have to say, I apologize and hope you are enjoying the comics you read, because I am definitely loving mine.

This is the Ant-Man signing off… I’ll see you between the panels!
