A New Look at Geek Pride: SyFy’s Fangasm!

SyFy’s Fangasm

Fangasm premiered Tuesday night on SyFy following ABC’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. I had heard several things about this show before last night: “It’s from the producer of  Jersey Shore!” Hmm, is that a good thing? “It’s the real life Big Bang Theory!” Ok, well I like Big Bang Theory well enough. Usually the fact that anything will involve Stan Lee is enough for me to be excited; however, I tend steer away from reality TV. It was mostly a request for a review that made the decision for me to go ahead and give it a chance. I am happy to report that I am glad I did.

Fangasm follows seven interns chosen to work for Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, a comic convention quickly growing in popularity. The founder and CEO, Regina Carpinelli, is the first to greet the interns to tell them about the exciting opportunity they have been given; and to further prove her point, the interns are patched through to none other than Stan Lee himself via Skype. Now that is an awesome first day at work!

The show continues on to have some awkward but funny moments along with some actual very touching ones. George Takei makes one very memorable appearance which threatened to have me teary-eyed. The interns seem genuine, and I do not get the feeling that they are out to exploit geek/nerd culture. They remind me of more than a few nerdy minds I have met in the past, all of whom are wonderful people. All in all, I felt the show gave a very positive outlook on what it means to be a geek.

The experiences and thoughts of the group are some we can all relate to, and I for one look forward to seeing what happens next. If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to check out the show and let us know what you think!
