Look, here’s the thing. I’m a nerdy girl raised in a non-nerdy family. So because of that I didn’t get introduced to comic books until I was much older, and I don’t read a lot of comics. That’s not to say that I don’t like to read them, but I’m not one of those people who has a standing subscription of comics that go into my box at the local comic book shop each Wednesday. I buy a series of comics every now and again, but the last ones I read with any consistency were when I was a kid and the X-Men comics were still just the X-Men. Before they were X-Treme, or New or Reloaded…but that’s another story for another day. However, all of that changed the day that I met Hawkeye.
Sure, I had watched Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor, and I went to the theaters multiple times to watch The Avengers. Partly because I’m a sucker for superheroes, and partly because I worship at the altar of Joss Whedon, but let me try to stay focused here. Let’s face it: in the movie, Hawkeye is not the most interesting character. Not only does he not have superpowers but he gets turned evil within the first 10 minutes of the movie, and when he does finally get to kick a little ass, his ass-kicking seems like nothing in comparison to the rest of the team’s. So why on earth would you want to read a comic about the least interesting Avenger? I’m glad you asked.
1. Because he’s just a regular guy.
That’s one of the things that people love the most about Batman right? He’s just a regular guy with no superpowers who is one of the most powerful Superheroes around. Well, Hawkeye is the same. He’s just a regular guy who has been trained to do some pretty amazing stuff. Have you ever shot a bow? If not, go find one and give it a try. You’ll have a new found appreciation for those who can, and it’s possible you’ll feel like a wimp after you try and fail multiple times. Fair warning. But these comics are about what Hawkeye does when he’s not being Hawkeye. When he’s just plain ole Clint Barton trying to make the world around him a semi-decent place to live.
2. Because any comic that starts almost every issue with “This looks bad” or “Okay, this is bad” is bound to have a great story coming after that statement.
This is true with every issue. Hawkeye seems to always find trouble, or maybe it mostly finds him, but either way, it’s an interesting story to read. And on top of that, you don’t have to have read the whole history of the Avengers or all the Marvel comics to understand what is happening in the Hawkeye story. Matt Fraction has done such a lovely job with this comic, and if I ever get to meet him I intend on tackle hugging him until he pries me off.
3. Because of the girls.
You think you’ve got women trouble? Well, Clint can sympathize with you because he has loads. In issue #9, which is still my favorite cover to date, we get to officially meet all of the women in Clint’s life, and let me tell you, that fella has got big problems!
4. Because of Kate Bishop.
Who is Kate Bishop, you ask? She’s the female Hawkeye. If Katniss Everdeen were to have had a mentor who taught her how to use a bow and arrow, I’d like to think it would have been Kate Bishop. Excuse me while I have a fandom crossover moment….. Okay. I’m done. But seriously, a girl that can shoot a bow is awesome. And in the annual issue, she gets a pretty great story. We’ve all thought about loading up the car and running away to California, right? But this is a spoiler-free zone, so if you wanna know what happens to her, you’ll have to read and find out for yourself!
5. Because of the artwork.
It’s really just incredible. If you like comics even just a little bit, I don’t know how you could turn the pages of these and not be mesmerized. Each frame is so detailed and just perfect, and let’s not forget very purple-centric. And I like purple a lot. So I like that Hawkeye’s color scheme is mostly purple. It makes me happy. And I like being happy.
6. Because at the end of the day, you need to know who Hawkeye really is.
He gets a bad rap. People think he’s weak because he’s got no superpowers. He’s uninteresting because he’s not one of the main Avengers. He’s not very smart. But it’s all lies. ALL OF IT. Ok, well, maybe not the smart part (see #3 above). But the rest of it is lies. And you should really get to know Hawkeye. I guarantee if you do, that you’ll love him like I do. And if you don’t, I’ll get Kate to shoot you with her bow. So all’s well that ends well.
